Spring Landscaping work parties – while the sun shines!

Hi all –

I just looked at the weather forecast.  Today (Monday) through Wednesday are forecast to be nice weather, with sun.  So, I am proposing a kind of impromptu landscaping work party schedule up to and including Wednesday, as follows:

  • Bringing out the trailer to load up:   Would someone with a trailer hitch be able to get the strata trailer (today if possible) from beside the shed and park it out in the visitor parking area by the lower pond?  That seems to be a nice central place for everyone to access.  I would like to leave it there with the back of the trailer open so people could load it, over the next two days.  Please reply if you could do that, so that I know – thanks!!
  • Cutting off low branches around the property:  It would be great to cut off low branches on trees that are hanging in the way of the mowing crew.  I will start down at our end of the strata (i.e “the panhandle district”), and I’ll wander around to other areas but if you are willing to do this in the areas close to your unit that would be great!  The branches can be brought to and put in the strata trailer, once it is parked by the lower pond.
  • The Big Spring Weeding of the entrance way borders:  I will get started out there later this afternoon, and I’ll do some on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday afternoon too.  You are all invited to come do a section of those borders too if you like, whenever you have some time to do that.  I figure with the COVID situation, some of you may prefer to work without others around, and some of you may like company, so I will let you choose and organize yourselves accordingly.  Again, the weeds can be put in our trailer.
  • Planting the remaining shrubs in the entrance way:  On Wednesday afternoon (I’ll go out there at 1:30) I’ll bring out the final 6 rhododendrons to plant in the entrance way borders, if anyone wants to help plant those.
  • Taking the trailer to the composting facility, and then picking up fine mulch:  Sometime after Wednesday, would someone be willing to take our loaded strata trailer to the composting depot (I think it is in Cumberland?), and then on the way back go pick up a load of fine mulch from Chinook Forest Products in Courtenay on Fraser Road (the road that joins the old highway just before/south of the first lights when you come in to Courtenay)?   That’s the mulch we can then put on the entrance way beds once they are weeded, eh.   I could help whoever goes to do this – I just don’t have a vehicle that can pull a trailer.

I have a call and an email in to Dan (of Best Turf, our landscaping contractor) to confirm when he will begin picking up clippings, etc. from the spot where we usually put them during the summer. I will let you all know once I hear back on that.  (But that will be separate from these big activities above, for which we can put the plant material in our own trailer.)

Thanks everyone.  I know this is short notice, but I figure we ought to take advantage of the sunny days when they show up!
