Hi all –
Here are some updates about our strata FireSmart work party on Tuesday October 14:
- On Tuesday October 14, we will meet by the Lower Pond at 9 a.m. to get organized and start.
- If you have loppers (for cutting roots and branches, etc.), an axe, a saw, and/or a BIG pry bar, please bring them
- Bring work gloves, and be ready to get a bit grubby, eh.
- We have two people (Buck, and William) who have offered to use their vehicles to help pull out shrubs – very much appreciated! This means we can work at two different houses at a time.
- William has a nylon towing cable, and I think Ron Hunter has a come-along chain that we can use with the vehicles, which ought to be strong enough to pull out the shrubs.
- If anyone else also has a good towing cable or chain, please bring it – I don’t know how close we will be able to get to the shrubs with the vehicles, so we may need to extend the towing ropes to reach some shrubs.
- the BowHorn Fire folks are providing us with a bin to put shrubs and branches in – a big THANKS to them for that! This will be for the shrubs and branches that we pull out or cut for the work party. And – if you are doing the work yourself for your unit to pull out your own shrubs and cut branches – you can put that stuff in the bin too.
- the bin will only be for shrubs and branches, not other waste or garbage. Thanks!
- the bin will be parked in the visitor parking spots by the lower pond for two days (DBL will deliver the bin on Tuesday October 14, and pick it up on Wednesday October 15).
- We will be able to open the back doors of the bin to load stuff, and also throw stuff in over the top.
- If you have shrubs in the borders around your unit that you want help taking out during the work party – please let me know so that I can add you to the list.

- If we have enough people, we can also do work to FireSmart trees on our property (for example, in/along the ditches), which means cutting off branches up to about 6 feet (2 metres) off the ground. This is so that a fire will just burn the ground cover and quickly move through, and be much less likely to climb up into the trees and cause a much bigger blaze.
- Please let me know if you are coming and you have a chain saw that could be used for this work – thanks!
- And, if you are willing and able to help for the work party, please contact me to let me know

Thanks!
