Hi all –
It’s time! To do the second part of what we started last year, with the thinning of the bullrushes in the lower pond. We are doing this to help keep some open water, so that the pond continues to support the wide variety of plant and animal life it currently does.
The date and time: Friday, October 8, 2021 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.: Low-impact thinning and pruning of the bulrushes at the lower pond
The weather forecast indicates it is supposed to be decent weather next Friday October 8, so we will schedule that day finish the wet slimy job of thinning the bulrushes in the lower pond – doesn’t THAT sound appealing eh!
We will follow the same plan we did year, which we found worked quite well:
- Ross and I will bring our two canoes to slide carefully into the water, without getting our feet in the mud.
- Someone on shore will hold the rope that attaches to the end of each canoe, to keep us nose-in towards the shore as we cut.
- Ross and I will lean over the edge of our canoes and cut off the bulrushes, and throw them into our canoes.
- We will paddle over to the place on shore where we slid the canoe in, pull the canoe up and off-load the bull rushes, and someone will then put the bull rushes in the strata’s utility trailer, which will be parked in front of #30. Then repeat with more loads of bullrushes in the canoes.
- And, we will then need someone to drive the trailer to the Parksville composting centre and dump the bullrushes there.
We will need the following for that day:
- some people on shore, willing to hold the canoe ropes while Ross and I cut bullrushes.
- Some people on shore (could be the same people, or additional) to help move the bull rushes into the utility trailer
- someone to drive the utility trailer to the composting facility and dump the bullrushes there.
Please confirm if you can help with this – THANKS!!

p.s. I will schedule a separate day (a bit later this month) for a fall weeding/clean-up event with the utility trailer available to be loaded up with yard waste, leaves, etc.
