This message is from the Waste Water Management System (WWMS) subcommittee to all LLE owners.
We have a request of all our owners to support us in achieving longer run lengths between pump outs for our septic tank.
We would ask that we all focus on diverting as much oil, grease and food waste as possible from going down the drain.
Here is why we are making this request:-
- Our waste water management system is not designed to handle oils, greases and food waste. This material creates sludge in the system.
- We would slow the buildup of floating sludge created by these materials in the septic tank. The level of floating sludge is what drives us to pump annually. If that sludge escapes downstream to the filtering and disposal parts of our system it could cause serious blockages and expensive repairs.
- We currently pay a vacuum truck company anywhere from $1100 to $1500 each time we pump septic tank sludge. If we could extend our run lengths between pump outs from 12 to 18 months we could reduce strata pumping costs by 33%. Over a three year period, and using $1100/pump out, we would reduce our pump out cost from $3300 to $2200.
- Of course, if we were able to push our run lengths even further we would reduce our costs even more.
What does diversion mean?
- Using the RDN food waste system to deal with this material.
- Stop using a garburator if you have one.
- Wipe down dishes and utensils prior to washing.
Your WWMS subcommittee has begun a test on our system with the objective of lengthening the run lengths between sludge pumping. We will be measuring sludge build up quarterly to develop trends for future use.
So let’s all help increase our septic tank run lengths and save LLE and ourselves some money.
